The word “Theyyam” derives from ‘Daivam’, The Sanskrit word for ‘God’. Some scholars believe that the Theyyam of north Malabar is a rare survival of some pre-Aryan or non-Brahminical Dravidian religious system that was later absorbed into Hinduism’s capacious embrace.
